Workout Notes Week Ending Sept 30
Another interesting week. Continuing with last week's challenge from Mary, I swam four days racking up over 11000 meters in the process. I broke up my four days of swimming with a ride on the lifecycle on Wednesday at the gym. Mike wanted to ride on Saturday, so I finally got the cables on the bike sorted out and Mike and I did the same McKinney route that Terry I did two weeks ago. The weird thing is that in 13 days they removed this bridge! Sunday Terry and I hooked up. The wind was blowing hard from the south so we made an impromptu decision to do a loop of White Rock Lake.

Tuesday, I saw Dr. Montgomery. He is going to cut me open this Friday. He sez I'll be able to ride and swim in a couple of weeks, but that there will be no serious run training for three months. That means I'll miss my usual fall road races (actually usual is not the ride adjective here since I have not done these for two years). But that's OK, I will start working on track season Jan 1 and I'll get in a couple of Triathlons in the winter and hopefully the daggum knee will stop hurting!

Workout Notes Week Ending Sept 23
This was one weird week.

Monday I was really dragging, probably from the residual effects of getting back from France and the 100+ miles bike on Sat and Sun. On Tuesday, Mary then laid down the law: 10000 meters swim each week until the end of the month (or maybe it was for the next month.) Anyway, I figured that meant I needed swim Tuesday-Friday, as I was unlikely to swim on the weekend. So I did that and made my 10K, which is certainly a PR for weekly mileage and also for number consecutive days swimming in a row. Sheesh!

Saturday morning Marissa had a soccer game at 0800. There was no way I could ride before her game. By the time we got home and settled it was heating up outside. I never was able to get in gear to get a workout in. :-(

Saturday Night Terry called about doing a ride on Sunday. For my last ride, I could not get the rear dérailleur to shift on the lowest gear. So I started to do some work on that, and also on the frozen rear brake. I could not get the break cable to budge and as I was checking the shifter the rear shift cable snapped. So much for a ride on Sunday. So, instead I did my 90 minute running loop. I had not run this long since early April! But I was amazed, I felt great the whole way. Of course the down side was that my knee was screaming at me for most of the next week!

Monday Sept 17 - 30 min Lifecycle 9.5 miles bike.

Tuesday Sept 18 - 200 WU, 500 Build, 250 kick, 250 Pull, 5x100 (IM, IM Kick, pull, free, easy kick), 2x(5x50(Fly, Free; Back, Free; Breast Free; Free; Easy Kick)), 300WD - 2500

Friday Sept 21 - 250 WU, 250 pull, 8x200(150pace, 50fast; 100P, 100F, 50P, 150F; 200F; 200F; 150F, 50 P; 100F, 100P; 50F, 150P), 150, 150 pull - 2400 Swim

Workout Notes Week Ending Sept 16
I spent the week working with the team in Aix-en-provence France. There was no exercise equipment at the hotel, so instead I ran on the cartilage deficient knee. The two week rest must have really helped, because I ran every day except Thursday. Thursday was great, as I discovered that one of the UI guys on the team swims every day at lunch. So we headed off to the pool, where we knocked out an easy 1500.

In my considerable experience with international travel, I do not recall getting a workout in every day. However, I did pull that one off on this trip! Friday morning I was up at 4:30am to get a run in before heading back to the states. And Saturday morning I had a great ride on the bike the morning after my return from France.

Monday Sept 10 - 60 min run on the AIX golf course - 7.5 miles

Workout Notes Week Ending Sept 9
Monday was Labor Day, which allowed me to get in the long bike that I could not do on Sat or Sun due to the girls soccer!

Marissa had an 8:00am game this Saturday, so I figured out a nice ride on the bike out to the game, and then rode home as well. Then later Saturday I got on the red eye to London, and a transfer to Marseilles. Finally Sunday evening I checked into my hotel and discovered that they had no exercise equipment. So having not run in two weeks, I set out for a surprisingly enjoyable run on the golf course!

Off to France, again
BMC Aix-En-ProvenceToday I am heading to Aix-en-provence for the week. What a whipping. I am a bit concerned about getting in some workouts, given that running has really made the old knee hurt.

BTW, on the Knee front, I had an MRI on Thursday, and I have an appointment with Montgomery on Sept 25.

Hughes Bily Showdown Part Two
Last winter Marissa and then Logan played games against opposing Coach Tony Bily on the same day. In an interesting twist, the girls had back to back games against Tony again! Last Sunday, Logan's team faced off against Tony's 98s in the Quarterfinals of her Tournament. The girls lost that match 1-3. Those two teams were the same teams that played last year.

Today Marissa's new team faced off against Tony's new team, which is mostly 96 girls playing up in the 95 division. They are playing up because they did not have enough girls to make a 96 team so they collected a few 95s as well. Marissa's team played a strong game winning 8-0. At one point Murf served a nice shot from 25 yards out which Marissa played off of her knee into the goal!

Workout Notes Week Ending Sept 3
The knee was killing me since last weeks 60 min run Friday. Because of that I rode the lifecycle on Monday and Wednesday. Thursday, I used my swim time to see Dr. Sterling about the stupid Knee. Since I discovered that its Cartilage thats damaged, I guess I am gonna stop running until after I get the sucker fixed. And so, I did my Thursday Swim on Friday, as I could not bear the thought of sitting on the stupid lifecycle for an hour. Saturday, I figured I could get in a 90 min ride before Logan's first game. I headed out to meet the PACC dudes, but then I decided that since I was only going to get 25-30 miles in, that I better ride hard. So I changed the ride to a TT ride and basically did my Murphy, Wylie, Lucus, Lovejoy, Fairview, Allen, Plano loop in reverse. Now I should note that this was well before sunrise and out in Fairview it was pretty dark and scary. I also saw a bunch of shooting stars!

Sunday morning there was no opportunity to ride before Logan's soccer. When I got home I went to the pool and had a pretty good 100 workout. I am sure I must have been pretty dehydrated before hand. But I gradually picked it up and had a nice session in the pool.

Monday Aug 27 - 30 min lifecycle; 10.5 miles

Tuesday Aug 28 - 2x(250WU, 250 pull), 5x(4x50 in 47, 45, 43, 40 on 60), 2x(50 Kick, 50 pull), 10x25 on 40 1-3 breaths, 50 - 2500

Wednesday August 29 - 60 min lifecycle 20.2 miles

Thursday August 30 - 0 Miles - Went to see Sterling instead.

Friday August 31 - 4x(250easy, 250pull), 5x100 under 1:40 on 2:00, 100 Pull easy - 2500 Swim

Saturday Sept 1 - Lucas Fairview Ride - 25.8 miles (Speed 19.0, 88 CAD)

Sunday Sept 2 - 2500 Swim - 250WU, 250 pull, 10x(100, 100 pull on 2, between 1:30 and 1:40)

Total for the week:
Run - 0 Miles
Bike - 56.5 Miles
Swim - 5000 Meters

Total for Aug:
Run - 31.2 Miles
Bike - 499.2 Miles
Swim - 17700 Meters

Workout Notes Week Ending August 26
This was a pretty hectic week back at work. Nothing like a week off to really screw you up. I ran on Monday and Friday. My knee hurt. On Friday I ran on the treadmill for an hour - the longest run since July 13. The good news is that I was able to go for an hour. The bad news is that the knee never really felt good. And then it hurt like hell for week afterwards. No doubt about it - that sucker is messed up.

Thursday's swim was just me and Bob. Bob cooked up the 200, 100 set and it was a really nicely paced workout. I used the 100 to work on form and that definitely helped me on the 200's.

I rode the lifecycle on Wednesday since the knee hurt from Monday. Then on Saturday, I road with the PACC guys at O-Dark-Thirty, but I could not stick around for the 9:05 ride, so I TT'd it home from Bikemart.

Sunday, Logan had an 8:00am soccer game. And I was pretty much toast after that. So I took another rest day.

Monday Aug 20 - 35 min run; 4.3 miles - Lifetime

Tuesday Aug 21 - 2500 Swim

Wednesday August 22 - 45 min lifecycle 16 miles

Thursday August 23 - 250WU; 250 pull, 6x(200 under 3:15 in 3:30; 100 under 1:40 in 2:00) 200 - 2500 Swim

Friday August 24 - 60 min treadmill, 7.1 miles

Saturday August 25 - PACC 5:55 ride - 60 miles; Speed Ave 16.9, Max 33.6; Cad 79 Ride Time 3:32

Sunday August 26 - Nothing.

Total for the week:
Run - 11.4 Miles
Bike - 76.0 Miles
Swim - 5000 Meters

Total for Aug:
Run - 31.2 Miles
Bike - 468.5 Miles
Swim - 15200 Meters

Soccer, Soccer and more Soccer....
LoganLogan's team played in two tournaments over the past two weekends. They played three games last weekend at Aces where they won their bracket. This weekend they played four games on the Plano Invitational where they came in second in their bracket and are the only team that scored on the winning team. Oh and they played up one age group as well. Thats seven games in 8 days. And of course that was only Logan. Add Marissa's scrimmage and two indoor games for Reagan, and the total becomes 10 games in eight days!

In another interesting twist, Logan's coach had several conflicts for the Plano tournament. It turns out that he recruited Marissa's coach to fill in for those two and half games. The younger girls really enjoyed how Ciro led the team. Fun.

Medial Meniscus
I finally went and saw Sterling about the nagging knee injury.

The diagnosis? Torn Medial Meniscus.

The solution? See Montgomery for surgery.

Because Sterling is not a surgeon, I have to take his recommendation seriously. I have always questioned the wisdom of having a surgeon evaluate one for surgery. After all they have a lots of reasons ($$$) to recommend surgery and not many to reasons to recommend a more conservative approach.

I also checked with Coach Vaughan. When I simply told him that Sterling thought I had a Meniscus tear he said, "Go see Montgomery and do whatever he says." That is pretty impressive for several reasons. One, two independent recommendations for the same surgeon in and of itself is amazing. Second Coach Vaughan always recommends the most conservative approach. Coach went on to say something to the effect that he knew for a fact that Montgomery did not have an RV payment to make and that he has plenty of business so he is not motivated to recommend a surgery that is not required.

In many ways this is a relief. Hopefully I can have a successful repair and really get back to running well and not limping around as I have been doing for the last year.
