and what about those purple people???
Ya gotta love the sound of choking coming from Minnesota right about now. Five wins in a row and then a complete collapse in their last two games.

On a side note, I love that Denver plays outside in the snow and those weenies from Minnesota can't handle the weather outside of their cozy dome.

New Years Beer
Following on last weeks Christmas Batch, I fired up the brew kettle again today. I did a better job on the grain mashing, and I plan to construct a lauter tun as I threatened. Also I dug out some rebar from the garage, and I used this to raise the brew pot off the burner a half an inch or so. That helped with the boil quite a bit - basically, increased the temp and also quickness to the boil.

Samples of the Dec 2 Batch were pretty good for just a week in the bottle. I have not yet tried the Dec 9 batch. Maybe tonight?

For today we did:

7.5 lbs Pale Malt Extract
2 lbs. Ground Weyermann's Carafoam Crystal Malt
5.5 - 6.0 Gallons of Water
1.5 ounces of Challenger Hops (10.1%) Boiling
0.5 ounce of Fuggles Plugs Hops (4.0%) Finishing
Wyeast 1007 German Ale Yeast

Specific Gravity: 1.053

Note Jan 5: Racked Wort, Added a fuggles plug. Specific Gravity > 1.022

Workout Notes Week Ending December 23
After last week, I needed to get my butt in gear. This was a MUCH better week complete with five (count 'em) five personal bests! Yippee!

Tuesday I did my 100 Trial in 1:17 narrowly beating Mary. That was my fastest 100 ever. Because I took Thursday and Friday off of work, I had plenty of time to workout at the pool. I did 1000 Meters before Tom and Mary turned up and then I stayed with Tom after the swim and knocked out some 100's until I had eclipsed my previous longest swim of 3500 Meters. Friday Victoria and I ran in the morning, I did 48 minutes, the longest since I had the knee fixed. And on Sunday, Victoria called me and we did a 64 minute run! Four runs in one week is also the best I've done since I got the knee fixed!

Monday Dec 17 - 35 min easy run. 4.4 miles

Tuesday Dec 18 - 500WU, 6x75on 90; 250 pull; 2x75IM; 2x75 IM Kick; 2x75; 300 pull; 50, 2x50 kick, 2x50; 2x50 kick; 100 easy; 100 TT (1:17); 100; 400; - 3000 Meter Swim

Workout Notes Week Ending Dec 16
I was not motivated this week. I missed two days plus Sunday the 9th. That gave me three zeros in one week. Sheesh! On top of that, after my run from the previous Friday, my knee was a little sore. Not too bad, but enough that I felt like I should take it easy on the running this week. So in fact I did not run at all.

Monday Dec 10 - 30 min lifecycle. 10 miles.

Tuesday Dec 11 - Nothing. In Houston at HQ for remedial manager training.

Wednesday Dec 12 - 31 Lifecycle 10.5 miles

Thursday Dec 13 - 500 WU, 2x(200, 100kick, 200 pull, 150, 200 kick, 150 pull), 100, 100, 6x50 - 3000 meter swim.

Friday Dec 14 - 60 min lifecycle 20.9 miles

Saturday Dec 15 - Nothing (The kids had four soccer games)!

Run - 0 Miles
Bike - 41.4 Miles

More Christmas Beer.
Earlier this week I went back to the home brew store for some more ingredients. There are still too many bottles that need to be filled! So following on the the process from two weeks ago I decided to do the grain on the stove. This time I followed the Step Mashing processes pretty closely - as close as one can get without a real lauter tun any way. I can see that this is going to lead me very quickly into doing beers from 100% grain, rather than the standard recipe. For today we did:

7.5 lbs Pale Malt Extract
2 lbs. Ground Weyermann's Carafoam Crystal Malt
5.5 - 6.0 Gallons of Water
1.5 ounces of Challenger Hops (10.1%) Boiling
0.5 ounce of Fuggles Plugs Hops (4.0%) Finishing
Wyeast 1007 German Ale Yeast

Specific Gravity: 1.053

Note Dec 30: Yesterday I racked the wort and added a fuggle plug.

Note Jan 05: Specific Gravity of 1.011 - Bottled this batch!

Jordan
Jordan Davidson died this morning as a result of complications from Stage 4 Esophageal Cancer. I have known Jordan since he was a small boy. The photo below was taken of him this past March, less than a year ago. His cancer was in remission and we were skiing at Taos New Mexico. I visited Jordan a few weeks ago in the hospital and he had lost 50 pounds. It was hard to believe that we had been skiing these slopes a few months before. I am glad that he is no longer in pain.

Workout Notes Week Ending Dec 9
I felt like crap at the start of the week and Monday was hell at work - so I took a rest day. But then I took a rest day today - that's an unusual two in one week for dubious reasons. I ran hard on Friday and the knee was a bit achy on Sat. I still need to take it easy running. My 100TT in the pool was the slowest of the season. Not good. :-P I am glad the week is over!

Wednesday Dec 5 - 36 minutes run; 4.4 miles

Thursday Dec 6 - 400 WU; 2x(4x100 on 2; 4x75 on 90; 4x50 on 60; 4x25 on 30) 200, 100TT - 1:24; 300 - 3000.

Friday Dec 7 - 44 min run (Lifetime Dallas); 5.3 miles

Time to Brew
Last week end I fired up the brew kettle and then also I did a batch today. For today's batch I decided to do the grains on the kitchen stove before moving the brew outside for the boil. That worked well, and I may continue to work with that process in the future.

7 lbs Pale Malt Extract
2 lbs. Ground Weyermann's Carafoam Crystal Malt
5.5 - 6.0 Gallons of Water
1.5 ounces of Challenger Hops (10.1%) Boiling
0.5 ounce of Fuggles Plugs Hops (4.0%) Finishing
Wyeast 1007 German Ale Yeast

Specific Gravity (Last weeks batch): 1.054
Specific Gravity (Today's batch): 1.052

Racked last weeks batch and added a Fuggles plug.

Dec 23 Note: Last week I bottled the first batch and then racked the second batch and fed it a fuggles plug. Today I bottled the second batch as well.
