Kinder, Gentler IRS?
It was bad enough that I had not yet started working on my taxes. When I got home from work on Thursday, Fran handed me a notice from our friends at Revenue. The notice suggested that a meager payment of $2000 would make them very happy and that they would go away. All I could think about was $2000 bucks of MINE in the pockets of some idiotic AIG executive. Not Happening.

It turns out that I failed to claim a stock trade that I made in Dec of 07. As far as I know I never received that 1099 from Fidelity. Making matters worse, was that these shares were originally held in a Smith Barney account and The Company (BMC), moved those shares for all of us employees sometime in 07. And because of that, I did not have prior 1099s from Fidelity, so I overlooked the fact that I needed one now. Sheesh.

Well after reviewing that transaction, and pulling up both my Fidelity and Smith Barney accounts, and also calling my friends at Fidelity, I was finally able to determine my basis in this transaction. I pulled up my return in TurboTax and added this trade to the mix and voila - $389 is the tax owed, not 2 grand.

I wanted to get this fiasco over quickly in part so that I could have the JOY of working on my 2008 return. However, I realized that there was no way for me to compute the interest and/or penalty's that might have accrued. So I called the IRS in an attempt to get those numbers so that I could write them a check and move on.

It took a few tries before I managed to get past the automated attendant and actually talk to a real person. Once they qualified me as the real me, they asked for my basis in the transaction. Then they told me, "You will owe $389. Is that right." Yep. Then they told me, "don't do anything with that paperwork that we sent. I am sending you a new copy with these updated numbers. You can pay in 30 days or so after you get the new forms."

Wow!

I was amazed. The agent I spoke with was very friendly, nice, smart and efficient. I could not imagine a better experience. Really Amazing.

Workout Notes 2009 Week 13
This turned out to be a pretty good week in spite of a crazy work week and also that this was a transition week - first week of intervals! Of course work was nuts given that I was out last week - so catch up overload is inevitable. Beyond that stress was building anyway, not for the least reason that this was the last week of our fiscal year. Yeah. Tension is pretty high.

Anyway, Monday, I headed to carpenter park for my first timed in intervals since December. I started off with dead legs. But I was feeling much stronger by the end of the session. I did not swim at all last week and it showed in the pool. This workout featured a lot of kicking, and I really hate kicking w/o fins! Wednesday, I did my usual 8 mile loop and it felt really strong! Thursday the shit was really hitting the fan in the office. I worked ten hours none stop, 7:00am until 5pm. No lunch, no workout, nothing. Sheesh. After work I hit the gym on the way home and knocked out my intervals. Not a great workout, but like Monday the workout got better as it progressed. Oh did I mention that the wind was blowing like a banshee? Friday's swim was actually pretty fun. Just a bunch of 100s hard and then a bunch of 50s hard. Not too bad. Saturday morning was really cold (low 30s) with 30 MPH winds - I mean it was blowing! Straight out of the west. My run took me straight into that wind for 4 of the first six miles. This was the slowest effort that I have ever recorded on that loop. And it was not because I was not trying! Sunday was supposed to start cold and maybe windy just like Saturday. I had a hard time getting motivated to get on the bike. Vic and I agreed to touch base in the morning. She called me and told me that she was up with Charlie all night - she needed a short ride and was going to go out on the mountain bike. The temp was high 30s and NO WIND!!! I decided that I would try to hook up with the RBM ride. When I left the house I was concerned that I might not be warm enough, but it turned out I was dressed perfectly. It was SPECTACULAR weather! A great ride, and a great way to end the week.

Workout Notes 2009 Week 12
Spring Break! Woo Hoo! Four days of skiing at Copper Mountain Colorado. Sweet.

Sunday we packed the kids up and flew to Colorado! I skied with the kids Monday through Thursday. Each day once we got back from the slopes, I headed out for 30 minutes easy run (at 9000 ft, BTW!) Friday Morning before we headed back to Dallas, I tried to run longer, but 30 min was all I could give.

Back in Dallas, Saturday Vic, Terry and I did our usual Ride to McKinney and back. I added some one to get to 50 miles on the bike.

Sunday, I got up early to run my 12 mile loop. My pace was pathetically slow. In fact probably the slowest time I've ever posted for that loop. So slow in fact, that I just aborted the run to 90 minutes (which should be the 12 mile pace.)

No swim this week!

Monday Mar 16 - Frisco, Co - Full day skiing plus 30 min run. 3.5 Miles Run.

Tuesday Mar 17 - Frisco, Co - Full day skiing plus 30 min run. 3.5 Miles Run.

Workout Notes 2009 Week 11
This was the last week of hill training at Flagpole hill!

Monday, Karl and I did the workout with just the two of us. I was feeling pretty good and finished with a solid 45.0 run up the last hill. I also felt strong for Tuesday's swim. Wednesday it was cold and POURING rain. But it let up around 11am. I took advantage of that Window to head to the gym. Once changed and I stepped back outside - drizzle. I had pants with me, but I had not put them on. I hesitated, and then just went for it. For the first three miles, into the wind it was a bit cold, but, then once I turned south - no problems. It was a solid run, coming in under 60 for 8 miles. Thursday it was still raining like crazy, but again it let up in the afternoon which was great for hill training. I ran really hard with Karl and James, but on the last hill someone dropped a piano on my back about two thirds the way up! Friday was another very good swim. Saturday Terry and I were thinking about riding the bike at ODarkThirty, but at the appointed hour it was drizzling and really wet. I went back to bed, and then went out for a 12 mile run a bit later. That felt great! This morning, finally with Dry Pavement, Vic and I managed a 42 mile bike ride. It was low 40s and my toes were numb - but a good ride other than that.

Workout Notes 2009 Week 10
Week three of hill training at Flagpole Hill. Monday was a hill workout and my legs felt pretty dead after running Saturday and Sunday last week. But after I warmed up I was able to run pretty well. Last hill was 47.9, compared with 50 flat last year. Tuesday the legs were dead during my swim, which also called for a bunch of stroke drills. I have not been doing anything other than freestyle with a bit of australian crawl thrown in for good measure. Need to do more stroke work. God do I hate Butterfly. The schedule called for day 2 of hills on Thursday, but Marissa was running her first ever Cross Country meet on Thursday, so it was back to the hill on Wednesday. And in spite of being really sore, I had another very good workout, posting 46 Flat for the 4th hill - also better than the 46.4 for last year. Thursday, Marissa came in 10th overall from all of the Plano eight graders - a very good showing - and first from her school. Then I went out and ran my old eight mile loop in 61 with very sore legs. Friday's swim was very nice, I kinda like the slow progression with lots of pull. Saturday morning I did my 12 mile loop in 91. It was really windy and I was convinced I was running slower than my actual pace. Sunday I rode the RBM ride again.

Wednesday Mar 04 - Hills Week 3 - 4 hills plus 4x:30, 2x:60, 16x:08 - 8 miles running.

Thursday Mar 05 - 61 min Run, Breckinridge - 8 miles run.

Friday Mar 06 - 500WU, 500 pull, 400, 400 pull, 300, 300 pull, 200, 200 pull, 100, 100pull, 200 Kick - 3200 Meter Swim (164)

Better week. Wednesday it was 75 when I ran, and Thursday it was 85 for hills! Back down to45 with 35MPH winds on Saturday. 54 and windy on Sunday. Sheesh!
