Big Eds Experimental Ale
I finally broke down and converted one of the many ice chests laying around the garage into a Lauter Tun. That had me committed to producing a batch of 100% grain beer. I ran down to the beer supply store and they gave me:

10.33 lbs of G West 2 row 1#
.5 lb of Briess Dextrn C_PIL
.35 of Briess Crystal 60L
and they recommended a dry yeast as well - Safale US-05.

I did an infusion mash of the grain but barely holding it 150 degrees for almost an hour. Then i slowly sparged the grain for at least another 90 minutes maybe more. I stopped when I thought I had collected enough juice for the batch.
From there the rest of the recipe was the usual:

1.5 ounces of Hallertau Hops (7.5%) Boiling
0.5 ounce of Hallertau Hops (7.5%) Finishing

But the yield was about 10-15% less than my usual batches - so I need to work on that! And the specific gravity was a bit light. More Grain! More Sparge!

Specific Gravity: 1.042

Notes May 01 - Racked. Specific Gravity 1.012. Wow that was fast!
Notes May 14 - In the bottle. Specific Gravity 1.011.
Notes June 9 - At first this one seemed pretty tangy. Now that it has sat in the fridge for a week or two, its really started to grow on me.

Workout Notes 2009 Week 16
This was a stressful week, at work and beyond. At the office I am doing year end reviews and of course a bunch of big customer issues came up and then the VP asked to assist on a special project. At home, Fran was making me nuts with a bunch of soccer drama. On top of that, this was probably the worst week for allergies as well. And that was complicated by the fact, that on both Monday AND Thursday the same guy was mowing the soccer fields at carpenter park where I was doing my intervals. Unreal.

Tuesday, due to the work thing, I hit the pool 30 min earlier than usual. It was the first time since we moved to Legacy, that I needed to share a lane during my swim.

I was hacking and wheezing by Wednesday. There was a nice south wind for my run, of course.

Saturday Morning Terry and I headed out on the bike at ODarkThirty. It was 59 degrees and the dewpoint was 58. Talk about soupy! But not much wind! We rode up o McKinney airport and then back to Terry's house. I wanted a bit more mileage so I rode out to RBM and got there right in time to head back home with the 9:05 group ride in the pouring rain. Very Nice.

Sunday, the legs were feeling a bit dead and the wind was kicking up but I got a reasonably paced 12 miler in.

Workout Notes 2009 Week 15
Gah! More wind this week. This has got to be the windiest Spring on Record. Sheesh!

Monday and Thursday I fought the wind with intervals at Carpenter Park. Overall not bad workouts just tired of the wind.

Tuesday I did really long swim intervals. Could feel that in my shoulders.

Wednesday it was windy but not as horrific as Monday and Thursday. I had a pretty steady 8 mile run at exactly 1 hour.

Friday was a company holiday (Hallelujah!) Terry and I decided to get up at O Dark Thirty and do some bike. We had planned to head down to White Rock Lake, but The Dang Wind was blowing from the north, so instead we did a hybrid of heading out using the RBM route to Lucas and coming back on Stacy Road and then back to RBM to finish. And it was COLD too!

Saturday I did my 12 mile loop between two of Marissa's soccer games. I hammered the course in 84, which is the fastest I have ever run that loop.

Sunday I was going to swim, but Victoria talked me into doing some intervals on the bike at Breckinridge. It was a spectacular afternoon, so that turned out to be a good choice.

Monday Apr 06 - Mon 8x:90(:90) Max HR 170 - 9 miles running.

Tue Apr 07 - 500WU, 1000, 1000 pull, 5x100 on 1:50 200 kick - 3200 Swim (164)

Wed Apr 08 - 8 mi run 60 min (163)

Thur Apr 09 - 16x:30(:60), Max HR 179, 7.75 Miles run.(162)

Fri Apr 10 - ride with Terry, (ave 16.3, ride time 3:06) 50.7 miles bike.

Saturday Apr 11 - Murphy, Plano, NStar, Breck loop. 84 minutes, 12 mi run.

Sunday Apr 12 - 1:25 Ride with Vic 5x1.1mile loops at Breckenridge(ave 16.2) 23.1 miles bike.

Weight: 162-164

Total for the week:
Run - 36.75 Miles
Bike - 73.8 Miles
Swim - 3200 Meters

Total for Apr:
Run - 65.5 Miles
Bike - 135.1 Miles
Swim - 6400 Meters

Workout Notes 2009 Week 14
Wind, Wind, Wind.

Sheesh!

Monday I headed to Carpenter park to do intervals. I was supposed to do 8x2:00, but somehow I programmed 10x2:00 into my watch. No wonder the last two sucked! It was really windy as well! Wednesday I had to take Logan to soccer practice. That meant leaving work earlier than usual. Instead of running over lunch break, I waited until we got to Campbell Green where her team practices. I knocked out a pretty strong effort, running in 8 miles in 58:30. Thursday it was back to Carpenter Park for more intervals. The wind was blowing 25MPH gusting to 30. Ridiculous. Although running the intervals with the wind was kind of fun. But recovery against the wind was horrible!

Saturday I got up early and knocked out my 12 mile run. I was hoping to have run it a bit faster.

Sunday was a day where I just could not get it together. I wanted to ride 60 miles. I planned a sunnyvale ride before I went to bed, assuming the wind would be from the south. But in the morning the wind was from the North. And it was cold. And the wind was strong. But the forecast suggested that the temps were warmer. Mike was supposed to ride, but he stood me up. So that delayed things. Vic came over and convinced me to put on pants. A good call. She wanted to do her loop but I did not. So I rode ten miles with her and the joined the RBM guys. But they did not want to do their planned 50 miler. Arrgghh. So I rode 36 with them, plus the 15 I had before I joined them, plus 10 more to get home - 60. And it was blowing hard. Like Thursday.

Enough with the wind!

Monday Mar 30 - Carpenter Park 10x2:00 (2:00) (164) 9 miles run.

Tue Mar 31 - 500WU, 300, 2x150 on 3, 4x100 on 1:50; 200 kick w/fins, 300 pull, 2x150 on 3, 4x100 on 1:50; 200 kick w/Fins; 300 pull - 3200 (165)

Wed Apr 1 - 58 min - 8 mile run from Campbell Green.

Thur Apr 2 - 10x:70(:80) HRMax 180 8.75 Miles run. (162)

Fri Apr 3 - 500WU, 2x(2x200 on 3:30 (second rep pull); 4x100 on 1:50; 6x50 on 55; 200 kickw/fins on 40;) 100 easy - 3200 Swim (162)

Saturday Apr 4 - Murphy, Plano, NStar, Breck loop. 1:33. 12 miles run.
