Workout Notes 2011 Week 22
Monster Fence Project
Marissa and I built this fence (and demo'd the old one) over memorial weekend.

I have been beating the crap outta myself. I have major PF in the left foot, and I did not do enough to rest it this week.

After a good swim on on Monday I was looking forward to doing the 1500 meters on Tuesday, BUT a thunderstorm blew in and they canceled the meet. Instead I ran around the greenhill campus for 30 min until the threatened to throw me out because of the lightning! That left me feeling pretty good for my Wednesday run and also for intervals on Thursday. All of that left my foot pretty sore on Friday. Friday was a good swim, some of it with Deno - Ron and Harold were no shows for the holiday weekend. Saturday I had 6x400 at SMU and apparently I went out to hard on the first three because I had nothing left for the last three. After that, Marissa and I spent the afternoon tearing down an old fence at my rental property and putting up an new one. My foot was really splattered after that day. Sunday was a short ride down to LBJ and back.

Workout Notes 2011 Week 21
Polar CS500
New Unit for the bikes!

I have been struggling with some PF in the right foot. And I have not taken any advil either - as a concern with the kidney issue I had been dealing with. Sheesh!

This week was week one of the Lukes All Comers Meet. Monday I met Ron at the pool and did a very light workout. Tuesday I ran the 800 and turned in a 2:23 800 - which was lots better than my two track workouts. So that was good! Wednesday run was ok as was Thursdays intervals. Friday was solo at the pool, although Deno joined me for 10x100s and we hammered those. Saturday's track was good and Sunday was a very nice ride down to WRL - although it was the first ride of the season where we started the ride above 75 degrees!

Monday May 16: LTF Plano Swim with Ron - 50; 4x50; 5x100; 2x250 3-5-7; 200; 12x25 - 1500Y 1372M swim;

Workout Notes 2011 Week 20

The importance of proper hydration

My focus this week was staying hydrated. That meant cutting down on the coffee and beer. That, and Dr. Mayo told me that I should stay off the advil until he could sort out my Hematuria problem. That all sounds worse that it is. And that sounds bad!

My intervals, runs, and swimming during the week went without problem. Saturday I had to get up early to get my time trials in. I had set my spikes by the door and then I left them there on my way out. The runs were unimpressive. I am not sure that they would have been much better had I run them in spikes.

Workout Notes 2011 Week 19

Where the hell is Dr. Becker??

Something like 12 years ago, as I was approaching the ripe old age of 40, I thought to myself, I need to develop a relationship with a physician. But, given that I don't often get sick. And that I was programmed at a young age to consider the power of mind over body. I knew that of developing a "relationship" with a physician would be difficult. So when I found Dr. Becker - I knew he would be the perfect guy. I knew this because I enjoyed the TeeVee show Becker and it would be impossible for me to forget this doctors name!

Monday it was raining like crazy when it was time for me to do my intervals. Instead of running I decided to hit the pool and do my intervals on Tuesday. That set me up for three hard run days in a row. I dehydrated myself badly during my Wednesday run, and in fact could not even complete the planned run. Did I take a break on Thursday? Nope. I stupidly did my intervals on Thursday and when I got back to they gym I was peeing a nice red bloody stream.

This set up a predicable set of events.

Fran demanded that I go see my doctor. I called up Dr. Becker. The pre-recorded announcement informed me that I had reached the office of Doctors Wolonski, Smith and Mayonnaise. Where the hell is Dr. Becker? I selected "zero" to talk to the receptionist, who informed me that Dr. Becker had moved to Ohio two years ago but she would be glad to have me see Dr. Mayo. So much for developing a relationship. I guess I was am a bit behind schedule on my annual physical exams as well. I told the receptionist that I would think about that. I was not interested in developing a relationship with Dr. Mayo. I could never remember his name!

Instead I googled "Blood in Urine" which I learned is called Hematuria. I quickly learned that this is common in runners after hard workouts. Well there ya go! Problem solved! I called Fran back. She was not amused, pointing out to me that in 20 years of hard running, I never experienced bloody urine. Good Grief.

Dr. Mayo had no great insights but took some blood and some urine. Meanwhile, I hydrated like crazy and felt pretty good on my swim friday, the saturday run and bike on Sunday!

Workout Notes 2011 Week 18
New Shoes!
New Race Shoes!

Much better week than the past two. The ribs still hurt, but the only thing that I am having real problems with are situps. I ran hard on Monday, Wednesday and and Thursday. Actually the PF kicked up in my right foot after the Thursday intervals. Good Swim on Tuesday, and an easy swim on Friday. Saturday was an easy bike. VickyP gave me a HED three spoke race wheel, which I tried out for the first time. Good thing I tried it because 7 miles into my ride the tube blew out big time!

Monday I decided that I was in good enough shape to enter the McKinney Triathlon. The Race was nutz with High Winds, Rain, and what felt like Hail. Really bad stuff. The leaders on the bike went off course, which set me up for third overall and first masters. Not a bad result for my first race in the 50+ AG.

Historic McKinney Sprint Triathlon

Today was my fourth McKinney Triathlon. Every year that I have done this race there has been horrific weather. This year the storms held off until the exact moment that my butt hit the saddle on my bike!

Then all hell broke loose!

They say that you should not race with a bunch of new equipment. So with that in mind, I went out yesterday to get some new bike shoes. I figured those would go well with my new run shoes and the new race wheel that VickyP donated to the cause.

Another new thing that I tried this year, was doing my warmup swim in my Speedo rather than in the TriSuit. That way I would not have to stand around the start in my wet suit. I did a nice 750 set with some hard 25s in the middle. I was out of the pool almost an hour before the race, so that was probably not the best timing. I went back into the pool area 45 minutes later and did another 250. Then I got out of the pool and hung around in my wet tri suit! :-)

I was wearing number 11, but I musta been the fifth or sixth guy in the pool. After the first 25, I was pretty sure that I was going to catch the guy in front of me. Sure enough 50 yards later, I hit my turn right with this guy. There is nothing more exciting than swimming three wide with dudes coming straight at you. It took me at least a half a lap to get by this guy, and then I had clear water in front of me. I gave it all I had, found the ladder and headed to transition. 4:17 was my fastest swim in this event in the last three years.

Ladders! Yes!

I grabbed the bike and headed out of transition. I was able to get the left foot in the new shoe, but the right one was not cooperating. It took me longer than expected but I finally got it sorted out. I guess the two practice runs, yesterday were not enought. It started to rain. Hard. It was dark. The wind was blowing me around so badly I had to keep my hands on the bullhorns. It think it was hailing. Maybe that was the rain coming down REALLY hard. Who knows. William Ritter blew by me. I pushed harder, trying to get aero when the wind would allow so. Then Chris Moody came by me. My goal was to keep them in sight. Which I did. The bike course goes through a technical section of really bad country roads with several hard nineties. I passed one leader who went down. Then the course circles back with a LONG stretch due north (into the huge wind). It was wild at the turnaround as the noise of the wind went totally silent with it to my back. I dropped it into my highest gear and dropped the hammer. I could still see the leaders ahead of me. The course turns right and heads back to the high school. The leaders went straight. I stayed on course and it turns out I was the first guy into transition.

Trying to stay aero

While I was out on my leisurely ride, the wind destroyed the transition area. There was one guy going, "where is my helmet??" I had stuffed the brand new Wellington T7s into a blue bag anticipating the rain. They had only blown about six feet away from where they should have been. I pulled on my socks, and shoes and I was the first guy out of Transition.

There was a young guy in back of me. Could he run? Hell, could I run? My legs were dead. I could not feel my feet. But I was pulling away from the kid. They had a Gator as the race lead vehicle. It was me and the Gator all the way in. I saw no one else. Would it be enough for an overall win?

Apparently Not!

First finisher. No one in sight behind me.

When the rains came they paused the race. Two guys who did not have to deal with the rain, hail and tornadoes, ended up posting a better time than mine. Third overall and first overall masters, for my first race in the over 50 category aint bad though!
