The Dallas Marathon was canceled due to ice, which may have been a good thing as my achilles was bothering me a bit. I did manage to run the Jogr Egg Nogr in pouring rain and cold. Smallest turnout in its history! Hurt my ribs skiing in Taos and took two zeros on the last two days of the year. Gah!

Sachse Turkey Trot

I actually did two races this month - the Best of the Best Triathlon, which was a really fun event; and the Sachse Turkey Trot. I also bought a Mountain Bike and spent some time trying to learn to ride that one!

December Workouts

The farmhouse in Cat Springs

I ran the Jogr Egg Nogr this month and won overall masters and was first older than 25! The last two weeks I took off of work. The Achilles was bothering me so I dialed down the running and instead ramped up the swimming and biking. This month was a personal best in swim volume. Also weeks 51 and 52 were also personal bests for swim volume.

Workout Notes 2012 Week 50

Reagan on the bars!

Focus this week was to taper and execute at the Jogr Egg Nogr. Work was particularly stressful this week. THAT did not help. I had a good workout on the track Wednesday night: 5:45 pace!. Thursdays run was slow and uninspired. Good swims on Tuesday and Friday though. Not a bad race at Jogr all things considered.

Achilles is really sore. Time to back off the running and get that healed up.

Race Report: Jogr Egg Nogr


This year it was a lot warmer than last year, but not too bad really in the low 50s. Unlike last year, I had a nice 3x1200 session on Wednesday where I was able to hold 5:45 pace. My left Achilles was really achy though.

I did the traditional warm-up around Norbuck with strides on the grass. I miss all of the workouts that I have done in that park over the years. I got on the T7s and headed to the start, where I found Joan D, who I had not seen in a while. The startline was jam packed with little kids four deep on the line - so we were quite a ways off the line.

The gun went off and so did the pack of kids! I was not really held up by them, but it was way more crowded than I was used to. It did not really thin out until we got to the West Lawther exit. My legs felt pretty good at this point and I tried to work it hard.

I was really surprised when I saw Coach Vaughan calling out the splits at mile 1. He had me in 5:36. I was not too far back when we hit the turnaround. It did not appear that there were any Masters runners in front of me at that point. I was still feeling good was able to push it hard up the bridge; across the bridge and on the home stretch coming back to Norbuck on East Lawther. The clock was not working when I hit the line and it turns out my watch did not get started correctly either. I had no idea what my time was!

I went out for a cool down jog and found Laura and Coach Vaughan back at the finish line when I was done. Pretty soon thereafter they posted the results which had me as the first over all masters in 18:36. Again, not a spectacular time, but much better than the Turkey Trot!

Sachse Turkey Trot Race Report
After having what I thought was pretty good training this fall, I signed up to do the Sachse Turkey Trot this thanksgiving.

I picked Vicky P up pretty early for the very short ride to Sachse High School where we both did race day sign up. Then warm up and strides.

I thought I had brought both the T7s (with speed laces) and the T6s with regular laces with me to the race. I had decided to go with the T7s but when I went to put them on I found one T7 and one T5! Good thing I brought the T6s!

As always this race has a pretty narrow starting line and it was jam packed with kids and other impostors. I was about four rows back! Behind me was a lady with a stroller. Unreal.


The Start

I was able to get through most of the impostors pretty quickly. A high school kid quickly took the lead. I was in sixth position at the first turn around. I had not really noticed the wind which we had for the first bit of race until the turn. It was nice having it to our back until the next turn around!

Well that was the race really. I never made up much ground on the guys in front of me and I managed to hold off all the folks behind me.


Done

Sixth Overall (First over 35) in 19:17 Splits were 5:33, 6:31, 6:31, :46.

Not a great time, but it is what it is.

Workout Notes 2011 Week 51

Age Group Winners Mug

The week started out on a low point when Brooks told me that they were not going to renew my ID contract for next year. Then things got worse on Wednesday when I attempted a totally pathetic attempt at 3x1200. I was not able to run, and the morning swims may have had something to do with that. I cut the workout short after the first 1200 as lightning was flashing around the track. By Friday I found out that Brooks was offering me a lower sponsorship rather than no sponsorship - so that was cool. Saturday I did an acceptable 5K at the Jogr Egg Nogr - but I did not break 18, and for the first time in 2.5 years I got beat by someone older than me. Sheesh!

Sunday, TZ, VickyP and I had a special ride. They were fixing to open a new section of the George Bush Tollroad from Flywheel Mall to I30. We took a preview on our bikes four days before openning. That was fun. Particularly when Vicky P crashed into the Bicycle Trap!
